Memorial Day 2020

Iwo Jima Memorial, MMA, Harlingen, Texas

This year’s Memorial Day weekend, I went back to South Texas to Harlingen, Texas to not only visit my family but take my sons to see the Iwo Jima Memorial in Marines Military Academy.

What surprised me, was that this is an actual cemetery with a single burial.

The plaque reads as follows:

Harlon H. Block of Weslaco, Texas, was 18 years old in 1943 when he enlisted in the Marine Corps. As a member of the 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division, his company was one of the first ashore on February 29, 1945, when allied forces stormed the Pacific Island of Iwo Jima.

We had walked around and read the displays. In addition to the memorial, there were other displays.

I hope that my sons will remember this for long time, and maybe visit once again in the future.
